Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MOT test?
The Ministry of Transport test, or MOT as it is commonly referred to, is performed on vehicles over three years old and accesses the safety levels of the vehicle in particular its roadworthiness and exhaust emissions.

Where can I get an MOT test done?
There are around 20,000 garages throughout the UK which are able to carry out a MOT inspection. Vehicle owners can identify a MOT test station by looking for a blue sign with three triangles (like the one shown to the right) being displayed in the local proximity of the test station.

How much does an MOT test cost?
MOT charges are based on the size of the vehicle and are set at a maximum fee which must be displayed on a poster inside every test station. However if a test station chooses to charge less than the set price this is permitted.
The set charges for each vehicle can be found on the Direct Gov MOT page.

How are vehicles tested?
MOT testing stations will have designated test bays in which testing is carried out, also equipment which meets the required specification for MOT testing will be used. The MOT tester will follow standard test procedures listed in an inspection manual.
Owners must be reminded that the MOT test certificate only relates to the condition of testable items at the time of the test and the certificate cannot be used as:

  • Evidence of the condition of testable items at any other time.
  • Evidence of the general condition of the vehicle in question.
  • Evidence that the vehicle in question is permitted to be used and complies to any other aspects of the law in reference to it’s construction and use.

What happens if my vehicle fails its MOT?
If a vehicle fails it’s MOT then the owner is given a failure document and the vehicle will not be permitted to be driven on any UK roads with the exception of being driven to be repaired.
Owners are advised to undergo any repairs as soon as possible in order to re-book the vehicle for another test. However this is left to the discretion of the individual.

Can I watch the MOT test?
MOT viewing is allowed but as long as the tester is not distracted whilst they are working.

Do testers have any qualifications?
All persons who perform MOT tests have to have taken part in a training course with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and regular checks on the test stations MOT results are done.

Will I be informed when my MOT is due?
Vehicle owners will not be informed when their vehicle’s MOT is due. The MOT test is the owner’s responsibility.

Owners are advised to peel off the reminder sticker on the front of the MOT certificate and place it in a location that will remind them such as on the back of the tax disk.

Why do I need an MOT certificate?
It is against the law to drive a vehicle of testable age (over three years old) on UK roads if it doesn’t have a valid MOT certificate.

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

  • If the vehicle is being driven to a test station for a test that has been booked in advance.
  • If the vehicle is being driven to a place of repair after it has failed it’s MOT test.
  • If the vehicle is being driven to or from a place where repairs have been made or are arranged to be repaired in order for the vehicle to pass it’s MOT test.

However, even if any of the above applies to the vehicle in question, the owner may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle and checks should be made to see if the vehicle’s insurance is still valid if the vehicle fails its MOT test.

The police are entitled to see an MOT certificate if the vehicle is required to have one.
